what an excellently written piece. multiethnic advertising is nothing new, indeed.

a deeper problem emerges when we look at this niche industry as a whole. when direct advertising to black communities first picked up in the 60's and 70's, companies that were willing to commit to reaching out to these communities were few and far between.

this has created a dangerous precedent, wherein industry groups like adcolor shower praise on these companies for making the "commitment" to communities of color. must we be excited by companies that look at us as dollar signs to be milked? at any cost? should we be concerned that ad industry groups of color have not set any guidelines or values for the companies that should be doing business with us?

to these companies, we're simply a resource market that hasn't been tapped. charitable efforts to appease are only a part of that same marketing strategy. and this is often seen in the strategies of companies that are most toxic to us, i.e. mickey d's.

thanks so much for this timely post!

Reading this was really refreshing. As a young Black woman I am sick and tired of seeing the Mcdonald's commercials geared towards the Black community. We need more of a critical analysis around the health of the Black community.
